Today's Session

Introduction & The Relational Recovery System

Lesson 1.1
Welcome & Getting Started
Setting expectations, shifting mindset, and the formula for real change
Lesson 1.2
How Did You Get Here?
Understanding how relational brokenness drives the cycle of pain and coping
Lesson 1.3
The Brain Map
A three-layer map of your brain that reveals the roadmap to healing
Lesson 1.4
Order of Operations
Where we'll begin and why the sequence matters
Why This Matters

Before we can build something new, we need to understand how we got here. Today lays the foundation for everything ahead — the map, the system, and the reason change is possible for you.

Lesson 1.1 — Welcome & Getting Started

Three Mindset Shifts

01
It's a Pain Problem, Not a Behavior Problem
Compulsive behavior is a symptom. The real issue is unaddressed emotional pain. We heal the pain, not just manage the behavior.
02
Focus on the Process, Not the Outcome
Sobriety isn't a pass/fail test. This program gives your brain the repetitions it needs to rewire. Trust the process.
03
Information + Application = Transformation
Tools don't help sitting in the toolbox. This is not a passive course. What you learn only works when you apply it.
Lesson 1.2 — How Did You Get Here?

The Two Questions We're Always Asking

Our nervous system is constantly asking two core questions — often without us knowing it.
Rooted in Fear
"Am I safe?"
Will you be here? Will you protect me? Will you stay?
Rooted in Shame
"Am I seen?"
Do you love me? Am I wanted? Am I enough?
Lesson 1.2 — Where It Started

Your Family of Origin

Family System Map
Caregiver 1
Modeling, attachment, safety
Caregiver 2
Modeling, attachment, safety
You
Developing nervous system — always reading the room
Safe?
Unsafe?
Seen?
Unseen?
Reflect
What was modeled for you about emotions, conflict, and connection?
Reflect
What was missing that you needed but didn't get?
Reflect
What did you learn about yourself in that environment?
Reflect
How did you learn to cope with pain or unmet needs?
Lesson 1.2 — The Roadmap

How Pain Becomes a Cycle

Relational Brokenness Core Wounding Behavioral Coping More Pain & Shame
Relational Brokenness
Imperfect attachment — feeling unsafe or unseen
Core Wounding
Pain, shame, and fear hardwired into the nervous system
Behavioral Coping
Self-medication that temporarily relieves pain
More Pain & Shame
The "solution" drives deeper isolation
Lesson 1.3 — The Brain Map

Learning to Drive Forward

Your brain developed from the bottom up. Each layer builds on the one before it.
CHILD Brainstem TEEN Limbic System ADULT Prefrontal Cortex The Brake Pedal The Gas Pedal Survival Mode
The "Adult Brain"
Prefrontal Cortex
Judgment • Impulse control • Empathy
The "Teen Brain"
Limbic System
Emotion • Reward • Craving
The "Child Brain"
Brainstem
Survival • Safety • "Am I safe?"
Lesson 1.3 — Why This Matters

All Gas, No Brake

The Inverse Relationship
High Low Childhood Adolescence Adulthood Cortisol Oxytocin early stress → elevated cortisol → suppressed bonding
The Loop
Pain + Pleasure = Relief
Without the "brake pedal," this loop gets reinforced over and over.

Your brain adapted to survive. Anything learned can be unlearned.

Lesson 1.4 — Order of Operations

Where We'll Begin

The course follows the map of your brain — healing in the most effective order.
1
Behavioral Coping
Prefrontal Cortex
2
Core Wounding
Limbic System
3
Relational Brokenness
Brainstem
What's Ahead
Ch. 2
